In fact, about 50 percent of Americans buy a lottery ticket at some point in their lives. The players are disproportionately low-income, less educated, nonwhite, and male. They tend to buy one ticket every week and spend $50 or $100 a week.<\/p>\n
So why do they keep doing it? What gives them the rationality to believe that they can beat the odds and become rich? I\u2019ve talked to a number of lottery players, and they all say the same thing: They know that the odds are bad, but they can\u2019t help themselves.
